Tesla has agreed to buy most of the graphite used in its batteries from us factories

Tesla will buy most of the graphite that can be used in batteries, which will be produced at a planned facility in Louisiana. The move is seen as part of the company efforts to source key automotive materials from outside China.

Melbourne-based Sierra Resources Will supply Tesla with graphite anode material for an initial four years, Bloomberg reported. Tesla will have the opportunity to buy more graphite volumes to further expand its Vidalia plant, Sylla noted.

Sierra Vidalia plant is expected to process graphite from Mozambique, effectively becoming the first source of graphite anodes in the United States. That would make the plant an important partner for companies such as Tesla, which have staked their future on the rapid growth of the electric car and battery industries.

Until now, almost all of the graphite used in anodes has been produced in China. Tesla had earlier asked the US government to exempt the material from tariffs from China, highlighting the graphite value.

"After due diligence of man-made graphite suppliers worldwide and in the United States, Tesla has concluded that there is currently no company in the United States capable of producing artificial graphite in the specifications and volumes required for Tesla production," Tesla noted.
